There is a big difference between the DSLR and point and shoot cameras. DSLRs (Digital, Single, Lens, Reflex) have the flexibility to change lenses that lets you capture high quality images. With the optical view finder in DSLRs, you get to see exactly the same thing as the images you get. In addition, DSLRs are very fast at startup, focusing, and shutter lag unlike point and shoot cameras. Comfortable manual controls in DSLRs are also one of their biggest advantages. DSLRs are not likely to change very often unlike the point and shoot models and the lenses that you use in one DSLR can be used with other cameras when you plan to upgrade them. However, DSLRs are also heavier to carry and more expensive than simple point and shoot cameras. Remember, for most home and amateur use point and shoot cameras are adequate and the quality of point and shoot models are constantly improving. However, for professional or high end photography, you should consider DSLR.
